I’ve taught IGCSE Biology for nine years, including several years in secondary classrooms before moving into more private tuition. Genetics is probably my favourite part of the course because students can go from finding inheritance confusing to solving crosses quite quickly. I use diagrams throughout my lessons and regularly stop for short questions rather than waiting until the end. Exam preparation involves plenty of past-paper work and precise use of biological terms.

Hi! I’m a Biology tutor with a biomedical background and five years of experience teaching IGCSE students. Human physiology is the bit I could happily teach all day, especially the heart, circulation and nervous system. I draw a lot during lessons because a labelled picture often explains more than a page of notes. Once we’ve worked through the science, I’ll usually bring out an exam question and let the student have a go without prompts.

Before becoming a full-time educator, I worked in a laboratory setting, so practical Biology has always been an important part of my teaching. I’ve spent seven years working with IGCSE students and particularly enjoy cells, enzymes and microorganisms. Experimental questions receive plenty of attention in my sessions. Students learn to identify variables, interpret unfamiliar results and evaluate methods rather than simply memorising standard investigations.

My route into tutoring came through pharmacy, where physiology and biochemistry were a big part of my studies. I started teaching IGCSE Biology six years ago and now work mainly one-to-one. Homeostasis is a favourite topic of mine, especially when we get onto hormones and blood glucose. My sessions are conversational, with lots of quick questions as we go. I’m also quite strict about command words because a good explanation can still miss marks if it answers the wrong thing.

Biology became my subject through biotechnology, and I still get particularly enthusiastic when we reach DNA, protein synthesis and genetic engineering.
